Bob and I use different gear but the same basic principles.

we both use the fishman that combines the rare earth soundhole P.U. w/a mini-condensor mic...

we come out of the endpin jack to a stereo cable that splits into two mono ends...

i use the raven labs dual parametric EQ/pre-amp into a powered mackie monitor.

i think bob goes thru an 2 avalon 737vt's... he doesn't reallyhave a "monitor" on stage cuz he relies on his "in-ears".

now, HERE'S the "secret recipe"...

using 2 channels of EQ (preferably at least 3 bands of parametric each), tweak the mic signal to not have ANY lo's and little (if any) lo-mids. this avoids the mic feeding back in the lo-end where it's most problematic and adds the "air" that a pick-up just doesn't offer. focus on a pleasing sound ABOVE 800hz or so...

then adjust the P.U. to have no hi-end and focus on the sound of the lo-mids and bass... below 800hz or so... find your warmth and punch there w/o the harsh, "quack" most pick-ups have in the hi-end.

now, using the individual level controls for each EQ channel, blend the two sounds until you like the end result.

a bit of fine-tuning and you should be able to get the sound you're after...
